With exquisitely printed plates showcasing many of the prominent artworks in the Rupert Museum’s collection, this book is an important contribution to the history of South African modern art, and a useful document of how the collection itself was put together over 50-plus years, chiefly by Huberte Rupert. Visually remarkable for its exquisite still lifes and portraits, in particular – fans of Irma Stern and Maggie Laubser’s work in this regard are in for a real treat – the book also highlights the work of a few lesser-known artists (Cecil Higgs, take a bow). Also a pleasure to see are a few wonderful lesser-known or early works by important contemporary SA artists.
