Culture & Marketing Rep

The African Imaginary is looking for a Culture & Marketing Rep to work alongside the founder and our Head of Editorial & Operations in Cape Town, representing The African Imaginary out in the world. The mission of The African Imaginary is to spotlight creativity born and raised on the continent. We publish a monthly podcast, daily video content, and essays. We also produce and curate events.

This is a public-facing role at the heart of the brand. You’ll be at events, on camera, and in the rooms with podcast guests and creators. The role also involves travel to events and festivals across the continent, so you should be comfortable and resilient when working outside your comfort zone – in new cities, unfamiliar settings, and under pressure.

Your Mission

  • Brand Representation: Be a visible, energetic face of The African Imaginary – at podcast recordings, festivals, and industry events. Build genuine relationships with creators, partners, and the wider cultural community.
  • Content & Social: Help shape how The African Imaginary shows up across Instagram and other platforms. Bring a flair for content creation, and support the creation of social and video content, including appearing on camera.
  • Trend & Talent Research: Be part of the team actively researching and tracking what’s happening across social media – spotting emerging trends, rising creators, and potential collaborators before they’re obvious. Curate your own feed and algorithm deliberately so you’re consistently seeing what’s relevant to African culture and creativity. Apply the same instinct to our brand’s own accounts, knowing what to repost, reference, or engage with so The African Imaginary’s feed reflects the culture we represent.
  • Marketing & Promotion: Own marketing and promotion for The African Imaginary, getting the word out on podcast episodes, events, and partnerships, and helping grow our audience and community. This isn’t sales-driven marketing; it’s about making sure the audiences know about us in a way that reflects who we are.
  • Event Support: Play an active role at our events and festivals – hosting and helping things run smoothly on the ground.
  • Cultural Fluency: Stay genuinely plugged into African contemporary culture – especially music, books, fashion, design – and bring ideas back to the team.
  • Travel & Adaptability: Represent The African Imaginary at events and festivals across the continent, including in cities and countries outside South Africa. Adapt quickly to new environments, cultures, and ways of working.

Your Skills

  • 2 years of experience in marketing, content creation or a related field.
  • Comfortable and confident on camera and in person – you’re a natural connector who enjoys meeting new people.
  • A natural flair for content creation, whether that’s through professional experience or simply a strong, self-directed presence on your own social platforms. You understand what makes something work on Instagram, TikTok, or video, and can create it yourself, not just appear in it. Skills in shooting or editing content yourself are a strong bonus, though not essential.
  • An eye for style – whether it’s fashion, design, or just how you put yourself together, you have a strong, considered aesthetic sense.
  • A genuine knowledge of and interest in African contemporary culture, especially music, books and design.
  • Comfortable using AI tools to support content planning, trend research, or workflow efficiency, while keeping what you post and how you show up authentic and your own.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Organised, reliable, and able to juggle multiple moving parts.
  • Comfortable travelling and working in unfamiliar environments – you’re energised, not thrown, by new cities and new people.

Additional Requirements

  • The direct lived experience of being black and African is essential to this role, given our editorial focus and audience.
  • A university degree (or equivalent experience).
  • Legally allowed to work in South Africa. Holds a valid passport and is willing/able to travel internationally for work.
  • The role is Cape Town based, working full time from our head office in Gardens; Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

Salary

The expected monthly salary for this role depends on your experience and qualifications, but will be in the region of R30,000-R40,000. Note that we are founder-led and self-funded, and we are not dependent on sponsors or sales.
