This week, all the way from the American South, we welcome Taeya. Taeya is an artist, writer and archivist who makes content that dives into various literary, archival and cultural practices from Africa and her diaspora. In doing so she centres African and diasporic voices, and provides a space where knowledge and culture from the African continent is spotlighted and made accessible for everyone, a mission that is shared by us at The African Imaginary. In this video Taeya discusses her favourite books that centre African women. In her words: “African women contain multitudes, and these books challenge the limits of feminine creation through fable, fact and fiction.”
Here are Taeya’s 5 Favourites:
1. Redemption In Indigo by Karen Lord
2. The Perfect Nine: The Epic of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o
3. So Long a Letter by Mariama Bâ 4. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
5. Adinkra Symbols Volume 1 by Adeche Atelier
