A contemporary story from Kenya – one that speaks to issues of cultural displacement and connection with tradition – Wanjikũ, Child of Mine is beautifully illustrated. Author Ciikũ Ndũng’ũ-Case follows a young Kenyan girl through her stages of childhood in three very different settings, with vibrantly coloured artwork by Cape Town-based illustrator Karen Vermeulen. It addresses the dearth of books by Africans, focused on African stories, for younger children – amplifying children’s understanding of diversity, inclusion, culture and language.
