A well thought-out, crafty spot of cosy crime is always a joy to escape into. It’s especially welcome when it’s written by a South African, and set here too. Columnist Tom Eaton’s new book is exactly that – and it will have you gripped and laughing out loud. Here, he’s turned his sharp mind to the goings-on of Johannesburg society. A well-known billionaire turns up dead at his own birthday party, and our protagonist – a floundering actor – is blamed for the murder. He’s got one week to solve the crime and clear his name. Will he succeed? Joburgers will particularly appreciate the familiar character tropes, geography, and the City of Gold’s eternally wild ways.
